The name (rich valley) itself hints at the particularly fertile ground quality, made up of loess loam and heavy clay soil with extremely high water retention. The Main estuary nearby ensures a microclimate that is particularly warm and constant right through to late October.
This has even resulted in the Riesling grapes becoming almost too ripe, so we have planted the Queen of Red Wines here, the Spätburgunder or ‘Pinot Noir'.
The yield is limited and the harvest matures to create full-bodied red wines with lingering finish, full of character, showing their enormous development potential and Burgundy finesse after only two years of ageing in the bottle.
